Agatha the iguana gives firefighters a new challenge

When Port Washington Fire Chief Mark Mitchell told Assistant Chief Steve Schmidt he had a special job for him last Wednesday, he wasn’t surprised.

Then Mitchell told him the job — to rescue an iguana named Agatha that was stuck in a tree on Moore Road.

“I thought he was kidding,” Schmidt said. 

While he understood Schmidt’s reaction, Mitchell told him he wasn’t joking. He had just met with a woman on Moore Road whose pet iguana had been missing for weeks and was just spotted in a tree across the street from her house.

Grafton chips in for phosphorus-reduction program

The Village of Grafton has contributed $20,000 to the Clean Farm Families program to reduce phosphorus runoff in the Milwaukee River and potentially reduce the cost of modifications to its wastewater treatment plant. 

Grafton is the first Ozaukee County municipality to make such a donation and make use of an “adaptive management” technique to reach state phosphorous limits.

Port police say speed a factor in fatal motorcycle crash on Wisconsin St.

A 27-year-old North Minneapolis man died Friday, Sept. 27, of injuries he suffered during a motorcycle accident in Port Washington two days earlier.

Adam Kellner, who died at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, suffered massive internal injuries during a single-vehicle accident on South Wisconsin Street at South Beach Road about 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, Port Washington Police Chief Kevin Hingiss said.

According to Hingiss, Kellner was in Port Washington visiting a friend when they decided to go on a motorcycle ride. 

Chris Kegel Day events are Thursday

The second annual Chris Kegel Day Bike Ride and Walk and park bench dedication will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at the Ozaukee County Trail Bridge Park, which is located at the west end of the bridge over I-43 in the Town of Grafton.

The State Department of Tourism also will present a check to the county to promote the Ozaukee Interurban Trail.

Christ Kegel day was established by the county in 2016 to remember Kegel who was instrumental in creating the trail.

Playground project gets a muddy start

Construction is finally underway in Grafton’s Centennial Park for an all-inclusive playground that has been in the works for three years. 

Grafton Parks and Recreation Department crews began removing the equipment of an existing playground in the park on Sept. 9 to clear the way for All My Friends Playground.

“Unfortunately, Mother Nature has not been very kind to us with all the rain. We need her to get on our side,” playground organizer Dianne Dyer said.

Fall Into Grafton to serve up loads of weekend family fun

Fall Into Grafton will feature free family fun and entertainment at the Paramount Plaza in downtown Grafton from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5.

On Friday, the Oktoberfest Beer Garden at Atlas BBQ, 1304 12th Ave., will offer German beers from the Fermentorium with a keg tapping beginning at 5 p.m. There will also be German food and a pig roast. 

Live music will be performed by Borderline Reckless from 6 to 9 p.m.

Grafton Chamber seeks nominations for annual citizen, group awards

The Grafton Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for the Outstanding Citizen and Outstanding Community Group awards for 2019.

Each year, the Chamber honors an individual and group from the community that exemplifies leadership, stewardship, integrity and community involvement.

Nominations must be postmarked by Friday, Oct. 11.

St. John Church to hold Wednesday taize services

Taize services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 9 and Nov. 13, at St. John Lutheran Church in the Town of Grafton.

Taize services involve short prayers set to simple musical lines that are sung repetitively by the congregation. These prayers are interspersed with readings from the Bible and short periods of meditation. 

At the end of each service, participants are given the opportunity for private prayer at the altar.  

The church is at the corner of Port Washington and Lakefield roads.
