Alumni, staff receive district’s highest honor

Their contributions ran the gamut, from teaching to business and coaching to athletics and law enforcement.

But the five that were inducted into the Cedar Grove-Belgium High School Hall of Fame on Saturday had at least one thing in common: a commitment to their community.

District looking at fewer students

This year’s Cedar Grove-Belgium School District budget was easier to balance than the one in 2025-26.

Supt. Elizabeth Freeman and Business Manager Tera Rogers reminded the School Board last month that the district received $500,000 less in state funding last year, and it had to find $150,000 for raises for a total of a $650,000 impact.

Raffle to support woman fighting cancer

Thirty-two years after surviving Hodgkin’s lymphoma, retired Cedar Grove-Belgium Elementary School teacher Vanessa Navis is facing triple-negative breast cancer. Treatment includes about 24 weeks of chemotherapy followed by surgery.

During the Friday, Oct. 9, high school football game against Howards Grove, a 50/50 cash raffle will be held with proceeds going to Navis, whose husband Brad recently retired from teaching at the high school. The game starts at 7 p.m.

CG-Belgium to induct Hall of Fame class

Cedar Grove-Belgium High School will induct five people into its Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 10.

The 7 p.m. ceremony at the high school is open to the public.

The inductees will be announced at halftime of the football game on Friday, Oct. 9.

Educator joins School Board

A longtime educator was appointed to the Cedar Grove-Belgium School Board on Sept. 23.

Stephanie Bernander was the only applicant to replace John Krechel, who resigned last month to coach the high school boys’ soccer team.

“Education has been my life’s work. Across my career in K-12 schools, higher education and educator preparation, I have seen firsthand the difference a strong public school system makes in the lives of kids and families,” she said in her letter of interest.

No injuries in Monday’s facility fire

Nobody was injured but residents and staff members were displaced from an assisted living facility group home after it caught fire on Monday, according to a press release from the Belgium Fire Department.

A report of smoke coming from the facility at 244 S. Royal Ave. came in just after 5 p.m.

The first engine crew deployed two ground ladders and did an initial attack on the fire, which was in the attic on the southwest corner of the residence.

The incident got upgraded to a first alarm, bringing in resources from other area departments.

Nine years of support

The Cedar Grove Parkinson’s Support Group celebrated its ninth anniversary Monday night at First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove. About 60 members played a memory game (above), enjoyed root beer floats and fellowship. Former Cedar Grove-Belgium High School administrative assistant Barb Skutka started the group after being diagnosed with the disease in 2017 and realizing the area lacked a support  group.

A stash of dead ash

Friends of Harrington Beach State Park and a crew from the state Department of Natural Resources recently made a dent in the park’s supply of dead ash trees, removing them from the premises. While fall weather offers ideal hiking conditions, the park’s Harvest Hike on Sept. 19 that was canceled due to rain will not be rescheduled.       Photo by Sam Arendt

Town meeting to be held Tuesday

The Town of Belgium will hold its monthly board meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, instead of the usual Monday.

The annual Wisconsin Towns Association convention is being held from Sunday, Oct. 4, through Tuesday, Oct. 6, in Stevens Point. Belgium Town Chairman Tom Winker is president of the association, and at least one town supervisor might also attend the convention.

Among Tuesday’s agenda items are the town’s right-of-way and an election update.

Fire Department’s open house is Saturday

The Belgium Fire Department will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3.

Raffles and blood pressure screenings will be held. Handouts on fire safety will be available. Children may take fire truck rides and play in a bounce house, and Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office K-9 officers Odin and Remo will be on hand and available for pets.

Free lunch will be available.

The fire house is at 195 Commerce St.
