Traffic panel pans idea of golf carts downtown

Port Washington should not allow golf carts and other slow-moving vehicles on city streets, the Traffic Safety Committee agreed Monday.

“I see absolutely no need for golf carts, ATVs and other slow-moving vehicles on our streets,” Police Chief Kevin Hingiss, a member of the committee, said. “There’s enough going on in downtown.

“I would like to see the whole golf cart thing put to rest.”

Pleitner fends off challenge for council seat with ease

The makeup of the Port Washington Common Council will remain unchanged as incumbent Jonathan Pleitner held off a challenge by Robert Brooks in Tuesday’s election.

Pleitner held onto the 5th District seat on the council by a vote of 412-282.

Turnout in the district was 63%.

Tweaked downtown plan to debut at open house next week

Port Washington residents will get their first look at the newest iteration of a downtown plan intended to guide development over the next 10 years and beyond next week.

The city will host an open house from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church.

A presentation by the city’s consultants, Graef and Kubala Washatko, outlining the plan will be held at 6 p.m.

Bob Harris, the city’s director of planning and development, said this draft of the downtown plan incorporates many of the items included in previous versions of the plan.

Port High speakers are state forensics champions

Postponed Port Easter events set for Saturday

Port Washington’s Hippity Hoppity Easter egg hunt and bonnet contest will be held in Upper Lake Park at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 8.

The event was scheduled to take place last Saturday but it was postponed because of the weather forecast for April 1.

The event will begin with a sing-along and follow with the egg hunt for children ages 2 to 12 at 10:15 a.m.

There will also be photos with the Easter Bunny, a golden egg hunt, live music by Shana Harvey and a story walk sponsored by the Niederkorn Library.

Roof-raising draws a crowd

A tall crane looming over a quiet residential neighborhood on Port Washington’s north side last Thursday brought traffic to a crawl and had neighbors setting up a watch party.

That’s when Brittany and Adam Ward more than doubled the size of their home at 138 Antoine Dr. in a few short hours, adding a 1,000-square-foot second story to their former ranch-style house.

Voters on Port Washington’s west side will choose between an experienced alderman and a political newcomer to represent them when they head to the polls on Tuesday, April 4.

Incumbent Jonathan Pleitner, who has represented the city’s 5th District since 2017, is being challenged by Robert Brooks, who ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Port-Saukville School Board last year.

Food pantries look for bipartisan support on April 4

Ozaukee County voters are being asked to do a little more than just mark their ballots next Tuesday.

They are also being asked to bring a donation for the county’s three food pantries.

The Ozaukee Food Alliance in Saukville, Family Sharing in Grafton and Port Washington Food Pantry are holding a “Hunger is Not Up for Debate” drive at polling places on April 4.

Collection barrels with signs decked out in red, white and blue will be placed at participating voting sites throughout the day.

City set to kick off Paint on Port

Port Washington residents will get their first look at a multi-colored mural created with tiles painted by people from throughout North America Thursday, April 6.

The mural, which will be installed on the north wall of the Twisted Willow restaurant building at the corner of Pier and Franklin streets earlier in the week, will be unveiled at 2 p.m.

The unveiling will also be the kickoff of “Paint on Port,” a program intended to bring three to four murals to locations throughout the city during each of the next three years.
