YOUR PIX: Gentle guest visits woman’s porch

Marti DeMario recently found a morning surprise,a fawn comfortably seated on the mat directly in front of her front door on West Whitefish Road. “She greeted my cat Cinder and me at 6 a.m. as she calmly relaxed on our door mat on the front porch. I learned that her mama must have brought her to this spot or may have even read the sign above her fawn, ‘Life is better on the PORCH… weekends, weekdays, whenever,’” DeMario said. “A patrolling police officer spotted us and stopped as I waved him over seconds after I was considering calling the police.

IN MY OPINION: At last, UWM gets the funding it needs to be world-class developer of medical talent

Back when hen Carlos Santiago was chancellor of the University of Wisconsin -Milwaukee, he would often comment, “Where are the cranes over the UWM campus?”

He was contrasting UWM, the state’s second flagship as a Ph.D. granting university, to UW-Madison, where flocks of construction cranes are often standing high over new buildings. The disparity over the years has been glaring.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the many individuals and organizations who came to our aid during a recent emergency situation at our home. 

On July 15, our barn started on fire and quickly became fully engulfed. While the damage was devastating to us, the swift action, professionalism and compassion made all the difference during this difficult time. From the first police officer on the scene to the last fire truck leaving our driveway, we found comfort in the heroic individuals who came to help.

LETTER: Port should limit parking so public can appreciate mural

  Considering the vast number of parking spaces the City of Port Washington claims exist, would it be too much to ask them to add four “No Parking” spots on East Jackson Street in front of Port’s newest masterpiece mural?  

That wonderful work is impossible to fully view and appreciate when half of it is blocked by parked cars.

LETTER: U.S. averts it eyes as Israel commits crime of genocide

To Ozaukee Press:

From 1967 to 1986, U.S. Sen. William Proxmire, Democrat of Wisconsin, gave 3,211 speeches on the Senate floor, tirelessly urging ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crime of Genocide.  According to Proxmire: “This is one senator who believes that ratification is not only patriotic, but also good foreign policy and a moral imperative.”

LETTER: Don’t just let foreign workers stay, let them become citizens

To Ozaukee Press:

In John Torinus’s recent opinion piece in Ozaukee Press (“Let foreign workers stay; with labor shortage our businesses need them”), he suggests that immigrants that are only here to work on farms or in manufacturing or construction should never have a chance to become citizens. He suggests that only those who are able to pay their own way into college and STEM programs have a path to citizenship. Is he suggesting that we have a system of haves and have-nots as the king and his loyal subjects would like?

Citizens who demonize our federal government fail to realize its importance and, most importantly, its ability to invest in us. Every dollar spent by the federal government, whether from taxes collected or cash received from those who buy our bonds, ends up in the hands of citizens.

These citizens invest that money locally by spending it for groceries, gas, rent, etc. The idea that federal spending is a bad thing is just plain wrong. It’s an investment.

In an op-ed opinion piece by John Torinus published in last week’s Ozaukee Press (“Let foreign workers stay; with U.S. labor shortage our businesses need them”) advocated for practical solutions and intelligent immigration policy. 

Under Trump’s administration and a Republican Congress, this is difficult to accomplish. 

PHOTO OP-ED: Beach lovers’ mecca

They’re coming from in town and out of town, multitudes of beach lovers who have discovered that Port Washington has some of Wisconsin’s finest Lake Michigan beaches. Wide expanses of sand, thanks to a lower lake level, uncommonly warm water and some hot mid-summer weather have brought crowds to Port’s two beaches named after the side of downtown where they’re located.

LETTER: UWM engineering program is being shackled by Legislature

As a former member of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents and CEO of a local farm equipment manufacturer, I couldn’t agree more with the importance of continuing to fund the materials science department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

     It is a vital part of the engineering program that offers vast economic benefits to Wisconsin’s employers.

     Business leaders are dead wrong to place any blame on UWM’s leadership or the UW System.
