Poull to address Military Historians

Vietnam veteran Ted Poull will be the speaker for the Monday, Jan. 16, meeting of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Military Historians at the Rose-Harms American Legion Hall in Grafton.

Poull, a Saukville resident, is a founding member of the Wisconsin Vietnam Vets and was a member of the U.S. Army’s 1st Air Cavalry Division in 1969.

His division was responsible for netting one of the largest caches of munitions found in the Vietnam War.

Poull served in 21 air combat missions and has hair-raising stories of ambushes and boobie traps.

Make comfort food classics a bit healthier

One of the keys to a healthy lifestyle is diet. You can exercise all you want, but you need to fuel your body properly.

While the idea of changing your eating habits may be daunting, there are ways to achieve it.

A healthy eating plan isn’t extreme, but instead emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products.

It includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts and is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugars while staying within your daily calorie needs.

Scott Schmidt of Port Washington was good at computer programming. It was his career, until one day he realized, “My heart wasn’t there. I stopped programming computers and played music.”

Schmidt had played the piano since childhood, playing and performing on the side while working at his computer day job.

Class to examine how soldier’s remains ID’d

An online program set for Saturday, Jan. 7, will explain how researchers identify the remains of soldiers missing in action.

The program, which will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is being held by the Wisconsin Historical Society.

It will introduce participants to the methods of military missing in action research, such as using online sources, searching databases, obtaining and interpreting government documents, identifying crash locations and tracking unknowns to national cemeteries.

Family Services plans new programs

Ozaukee Family Services is planning several new parenting programs for 2023.

The Diaper Bag Club will meet from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month starting in January.

The group is intended for caregivers and children through their first year. Caregivers may share their joys and challenges and receive helpful feedback from each other and the facilitators in a safe, non-judgmental space.

Monthly topics such as sleep, first foods, temperament and brain development will be addressed as well.

Digital Edge is champ of Illuminate Ozaukee

Digital Edge Copy and Print Center of Grafton was selected as the champion for Illuminate Ozaukee, a drive-through holiday light show in Cedarburg sponsored by the Ozaukee Nonprofit Center.

The shop’s display brought to life Whoville from Dr. Seuss’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and featured many recognizable characters, including the Grinch himself.

Illuminate Ozaukee was held for six nights, with more than 25 local businesses and community organizations decorating plots in Herman A. Zeunert Park.

Port church to offer finance classes in 2023

People who want to take control of their money are invited to attend Financial Peace Universtiy at Friedens Church in Port Washington.

Classes will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays on nine Tuesdays beginning Jan. 10.

The course uses common sense principles and small-group accountability to  provide people with the tools they need to change their behavior and succeed financially.

The lessons are taught by bestselling authors and money experts Dave Ramsey and Rachel Cruze.

The cost is $95 per family.
