It’s not that Craig Modahl of Port Washington had always wanted to write a book, but he and his wife’s journey caring for a man with special needs prompted him to take copious notes.

With inspiration from a writers’ group, Craig Modahl of Port finished his memoir of caring for a man with special needs, a story, he says, that needs to be told and will now be published.

Beer and wine to benefit girls’ basketball is a slam dunk

Supporters of Port Washington High School girls’ basketball turned out at Harbor Hills Recreation Center in Port Washington on Saturday for the fifth annual Quest for the Net beer and wine tasting fundraiser, which benefits the program. A cappella concert to be held Feb. 24

Six Appeal, an award winning a cappella ensemble, will perform a concert Friday, Feb. 24, at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center.

The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The group started in 2006 at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., and has grown into a professional ensemble based in Minneapolis.

‘Green Up Your Winter Blues’ held Feb. 25

The Port Washington Garden Club is holding its annual “Green Up Your Winter Blues” seminar on Saturday, Feb. 25.

The seminar will include four gardening experts sharing information on plants and design techniques that every gardener will be able to put to good use.

Mark Dwyer, former director of horticulture at Janesville Rotary Gardens, will present a session on the plants and design of the healing garden at Edgerton Hospital and Health Services.

Port Senior Center programs announced

February and March programs at the Port Washington Senior Center have been announced.

Circuit training for men and women will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 28 to April 20.

The program is adapted from Strong Women, Silver Sneakers and other age inspired fitness routines. A physical release form must be completed for new participants or current members with physical or health changes.

The instructor is Tina Mach.

Domestic violence to be discussed March 2

“The Lens of Advocacy on Domestic Violence” will be presented at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 2, at the Milwaukee Ale House in Grafton.

The lunch presentation, part of the Beyond the Headlines series, will include a panel discussion by Ozaukee County Sheriff Christy Knowles, Advocates of Ozaukee Executive Director Barb Fischer, Convergence Resource Center Executive Director Debbie Lassiter and Dominique Pritchett, a therapist and owner of Beloved Wellness Center in Kenosha.

Maple sugarin’ events are set at Riveredge

Although there is time before maple sugar season begins, Riveredge Nature Center in the Town of Saukville has announced its lineup of activities.

More than 400 maple trees are tapped at the center each year, and the sap they produce is used to make more than 75 gallons of syrup.

More than 2,000 people participate in maple sugar programs at the center annually, and more than 1,000 pancakes are served with syrup produced at the center during its programs each year.

They may not be better, but some new plants worth a look

Every year when shiny booklets touting the newest  plants to hit garden centers show up in my mailbox, I remind myself that new isn’t necessarily better when it comes to plants. Then the other half of my brain reminds me that while new plants may not be better, but they definitely are fun.

Perhaps it’s winter boredom that makes me lust for plants with that tantalizing “new” label on them. It certainly isn’t good sense. So, dispensing with my better judgement, here are a few of the new plants coming to garden centers that have caught my eye.

Warm cold winter nights with hearty stew

Winter is still here, as last week’s snowstorm reminded us, and on days when the weather is cold, stew is an ideal meal. The aroma of the hearty dish fills the house, tempting the senses and piquing hunger.

A piping hot bowl of simmered meats, seafood, hearty vegetables and herbs make stew perfect for lunch or dinner. Add a loaf of crusty bread or a plate of fresh pasta or rice and you have a filling meal fit for family and friends.
