LETTER: Risk is inevitable, but we can choose courage, compassion

To Ozaukee Press:

The Christmas parade massacre in Waukesha reminds us that life cannot be lived without risk. As we wait for the details to solidify, one fact cannot be denied. This was an incident where at the very least the driver lacked the capacity to recognize the tragedy within the human toll.

There are people among us who have such a damaged ability to feel compassion that not even the horror of using a vehicle as a battering ram can break through to find the strings of our common humanity. The specifics are always different but this is as it always has been; a part of the human condition.

It is up to all of us to choose to live life with courage and compassion despite the risk.
