LETTER: New signs revive memories of life in hamlet of Knellsville

To Ozaukee Press,

I was thrilled to read last week’s Ozaukee Press article about Knellsville and the new signage for it. Yes, it was a thriving community for many years, before freeway expansion, and my family was a part of it.     

My uncle, Michael Jackovich, and my parents, Peter and Mary Gora, were partners in the Country Inn and Store from 1945-1967. It was a popular gathering spot for all the surrounding neighbors and friends.

A gas station, just north of the Inn was run by my uncles George and Andy, both returning from World War II service, as was Michael.

My sister and I were fortunate enough to be students at the one-room school, which is now the Town Hall. Miss Viola Eidenberger taught all eight grades there, and was the only teacher I knew until going to Port Washington High School.

Ozaukee Press photographer Vern Arendt was a friend of my uncle Michael’s, so we have many pictures of the Inn and the VFW doings there. Precious memories.

So, thank you, Michael Didier, Town of Port Washington chairman, for posting signs at three entrances to Knellsville. Now I can finally show people, that’s where I lived.
