Port wrestlers go undefeated in 75-0 win

Matches were few and far between in the Port Washington High School wrestling team’s shutout at Cedarburg on Dec. 30.

The Pirates won all four matches wrestled in a 75-0 demolition of the Bulldogs.

Three Pirates scored pins and another won by decision. Eight Pirates won via forfeit, and one weight class was double forfeited.

“I think the guys that actually had matches, they wrestled well and they wrestled hard,” coach Angelo LaRosa said.

“I’m happy with how they competed.”

At 285 pounds, junior Ever Armendariz pinned Drake Cofta in 1 minute, 27 seconds.

At 152, sophomore Nate Streiff pinned Sean Weeden in 1:10.

At 160, freshman Diego Armendariz pinned Aaron Pokel in 2:36.

At 113, junior Brodie Brecke beat Oliver Grudzinski, 8-2.

In exhibition matches held to give wrestlers experience but that don’t count toward the final score, Pirates Nick Gonzalez, Diego Armendariz and Lucas Schumacher all scored pins. Cedarburg won one exhibition match via pin.

LaRosa said he had the team take it easy over break with not as many practices as usul.

“We still don’t even know what the end of the year is going to be,” he said.

Now on the fourth schedule of the season, the Pirates were to host West Bend East and Waukesha West on Wednesday. Both teams have full rosters, so the Pirates should get multiple matches.

Port is scheduled to compete in a quadrangular meet at Nicolet on Jan. 13.
