Impact of road salt on lakes is subject of talk

    “Wisconsin’s Freshwater is Getting Salty” is the topic for an online Badger Talk to be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21.
    The talk will be given by University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate student Linnea Rock, who will discuss the environmental consequences of using road salt.
    The presentation explores long-term chloride trends and the state of Wisconsin lakes with regard to chloride contamination, identifies the lakes that are at risk and examines what is currently being done locally to curtail further environmental damage.
    Rock has worked in environmental advocacy and education and for the Department of Natural Resources Water Quality Bureau. She is a second-year master’s student at the UW Center for Limnology researching chloride in the Upper Yahara River Watershed.
