Ozaukee’s indifferent record-breaker

It was the shot heard ‘round the shoe at Oostburg High School last Friday, but Ozaukee basketball star Noah Miller didn’t even know its significance.

With a three-pointer from the corner 90 seconds into the second half, Miller broke Ozaukee’s all-time boys’ scoring record of 1,148 points held by 2016 graduate Michael Richter.

As soon as the ball went in, Miller just ran back down the court to play defense like he always does. The Warriors were in a Big East Conference battle in Oostburg’s gym nicknamed the Shoe.

The senior guard wasn’t keeping track of his points or the record.

“Honestly, I had no idea,” he said.

Coach Bob Domach later told him, but for Miller it wasn’t a big deal.

“I’m not in it for that. I’m in it for the team,” he said.

Domach highlighted Miller’s humility.

“The best part of the record is I mentioned it to the team after the game. And Noah’s like, ‘Coach, I don’t care about that. We lost. I just want to win.’ That’s truly genuine that the kid just wants to win. He doesn’t care about his own accolades. He just wants the team to have success,” Domach said.

“That tells you what type of kid he is — good upbringing from his parents and everything, a good humble kid.”

Oostburg won, 68-54. Miller finished with 22 points and now sets a record every time he scores.

His older brother Owen, a 2015 grad, scored 1,115 points in his career and is third on the list.

Basketball might not even be Noah’s best sport. The shortstop will play baseball for the University of Alabama next year. Owen is an infielder in the Cleveland Indians organization.

Noah has 1,159 points and is 338 behind the school’s all-time scoring leader Becca Schauer, who set the record last season, breaking the old mark of 1,483 by 2004 graduate Courtnie Paulus.

The Warriors have 18 games left on their schedule. Miller would have to average 18.7 points per game to catch Schauer. Miller averaged 19.8 points per game last season in making the Big East first team.
