End of grace period for winter parking likely to mean more tickets

Winter parking rules are in effect in the Village of Fredonia, and motorists who park their cars on the street between 2 and 6 a.m. should expect to get a ticket following a temporary grace period, Village Marshal Dave Davel said last week.

“You can expect tickets to be put out beginning in the next few days,” Davel told the Village Board last week.

Davel said officers put out several hundred warning tickets after winter parking rules went into effect Dec. 1.

“Some people complain about why enforce the rules when there’s no snow on the ground,” he said. “But you can’t enforce the ordinance based on the amount of snowfall.”

Under the winter parking ordinance, vehicles parked on the street from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. from Dec. 1 to April 1 will be ticketed $10 if paid in the first five days after the ticket is issued. The fine goes up depending on how many days elapse before the ticket is paid.

Permits to park in village-owned parking lots cost $25 per month and can be purchased at Village Hall, 242 Fredonia Ave.

Davel said vehicle owners will see stricter enforcement of the parking restriction.

“We kind of hit it hard in December” to encourage compliance throughout the winter months, he said.
