Grafton girls take 10th at state

Two Grafton High School divers finished in the top four in Division 2 in last week’s state meet at the Waukesha South Natatorium. The Black Hawks as a team cracked the top 10 for the second straight season.

Grafton scored 110 points, five behind Lakeland Union and 17 ahead of Whitewater.

Rhinelander won the 28-team meet with 255 points. Shorewood scored 228. Grafton’s North Shore Conference rival Whitefish Bay tied for seventh with 130 points.

Kohler Co-op, which edged the Hawks for the Plymouth Sectional title the week before, was sixth with 131 points.

Sophomore Maranda Uttke scored 439.3 points in diving, good for third place.

Senior teammate Sophia Scolman, who holds the school record in diving, was right behind in fourth with 437.9 points.

“This is the best girls diving pair that Grafton High School has ever had,” diving coach Dennis Hubert said.

“I’m extremely proud of both them. The girls had an outstanding season amongst some trying circumstances. They are great competitors and friends.”

Whitnall senior Bella Smith won diving with 519.15 points. Her teammate, junior Kamyla Held, was second with 465.95.

Grafton’s top swimming performance came from sophomore Libby Michel. She was fifth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 13.58 seconds.

Sophomore Halle Grimm was seventh in the 100 backstroke in 59.85.

The 100 freestyle relay of senior Allison Garncarz, Grimm, Michel and senior Elaine Proefrock was seventh in 1:40.9.

The 200 medley relay of Grimm, senior Claire Agnew, Michel and Proefrock was 10th in 1:55.05.

Proefrock was 12th in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.86 and 13th in the 500 freestyle in 5:31.61.

Garncarz finished 12th in the 50 freestyle in 25.44 and was 16th in the 100 freestyle in 57.48.

The Hawks last season finished 10th of 38 teams with 87 points.
