Cedar Grove-Belgium High School’s volleyball team started its season at a high-quality rival last Thursday in Oostburg.
The Lady Dutch swept the Rockets, 25-13, 25-15, 25-7.
“We just struggled with serve receive. If we had better serve receive, we would’ve been more competitive,” coach Sharon Stellwagen said.
“They had 20 aces and we had four. That pretty much swings the matches.”
One serve, she said, looked like it was curling out of bounds, then twisted back in.
“Even the line judge said, ‘I thought for sure it was out,’” Stellwagen said.
Rocket Clare Jaworski served three aces of her own and had seven assists.
“Clare did a really great job,” Stellwagen said.
Sydney Soerens led the Rockets with three kills. Allie Wolff had two. Kaylee Cherney had 10 digs.
“We played good defense. We were picking up balls from them, but when you give up 20 aces, that’s a lot of points to give up. We’re not getting any attacks. We were in the negative for hitting,” Stellwagen said.
“We started off against a very, very good team, but it makes you see what you need to work on.”
The Rockets were to host Sheboygan Lutheran on Tuesday, play at Random Lake on Thursday, Sept. 24, in a Lake Country Lutheran tournament on Saturday and host Port Washington on Monday.
