Spring sports teams may get together this summer, but competitions in the North Shore Conference will be left up to member schools.

With school canceled until the end of June due to Gov. Tony Evers’ Safer-at-Home order in response to the coronavirus pandemic, basketball playoffs were cut short and spring sports’ seasons were eliminated.

The WIAA has allowed spring sports’ teams 30 days of contact starting July 1 to give athletes and their coaches a chance to practice and play.

The NSC released a statement this month that said it “does not plan to hold or sanction conference competitions or championships during this 30-day contact window.”

At least a couple of coaches said they want to get their teams together.

Grafton’s new softball coach Mike Bergmann wants his team to try out the turf infield that was installed this spring.

“I would love to be able to get a handful of practices in on our beautiful new field and then be able to host a few games there as well,” he said.

“It certainly won’t be the same as a full season, but I’m hoping there are still some positive memories that we can create.”

Port Washington softball coach Ben Navigato wants his team to play.

“It would be nice to give the seniors their chance to take the field a few final times and it would also be helpful for the younger players to have the chance to play together and build some relationships and unity for future years. I sure hope we can make something happen,” he said.

“I have a young team so it would be good to play a little bit over the summer and maybe play some tournaments.”
