LETTER: Stroebel and his party disdain democracy to remain in power

To Ozaukee Press:

State Sen. Duey Stroebel and his fellow Republicans are more dangerous to the fabric of American democracy than the virus. Rather than do the work of democracy, they try to limit democracy itself.

There is no part of the Republican Party, not its president, its leadership in Congress, conservative allies on the Wisconsin Supreme Court or its affiliated propaganda outlet Fox News, that has an interest in a fair, equal and expansive democracy.

In 2018, Wisconsin’s electorate chose a Democratic governor and gave 53% of their support to Democratic candidates for the state Assembly. But the state is so heavily gerrymandered that despite this popular-vote majority Democrats got only 36% of the Assembly seats.

Republican lawmakers have taken every opportunity to restrict voting with strict photo ID requirements, mass voter purges, new restrictions on registering voters and ending extended voting periods.

 Wisconsin is well on its way being like Hungary’s Fidesz (that nation’s white nationalist ruling party) as Republicans seek a permanent lock on power.
