LETTER: Stroebel, Brooks serve neither democracy nor constituents

To Ozaukee Press:

“I believe our democracy works best when the individuals who make law are in a position to be held publicly accountable to voters.” This is an exact quote from State Sen. Duey Stroebel (R-Saukville) in a response letter I received last year. I heartily agree with his statement.

I trust voters will hold our Wisconsin legislators accountable in the November election when looking back on the mass confusion and disregard for the voting process that marked the April 7 election.          As we approached this week’s election, while simultaneously confronting a deadly virus, public health warnings to stay at home and an economic disaster, my state legislators were either silent or well into the blame game related to the election.  The only actions taken by the majority legislative party were to point fingers and file lawsuits, with each judicial round leading to another lawsuit.  

They opposed all ideas from Gov. Evers, but offered no solutions of their own as to how to keep voters and poll workers safe while making sure that all voters could cast a ballot. Gov. Evers’ executive order to postpone the election (unfortunately overturned by a 5-4 vote of the Wisconsin Supreme Court) was the right thing to do for a fair voting process in this time of crisis.

To my legislators, Sen. Duey Stroebel and Rep. Robert Brooks: You’ve been missing in action at a time when the rest of us are being called upon to join forces and do our part. Isn’t a national emergency a time for everyone to pitch in and for all leaders to be on deck? You have served neither democracy nor your voting constituents in this moment.
