County to create commission to curb energy use

The Ozaukee County Public Works Committee recommended last week to form an Energy Action Commission that would oversee energy usage in county buildings and operations.

The commission, if approved by the full County Board, would replace the county Energy Action Team, which was formed in 2014 to assess energy use and make recommendations.

It would report to the Public Works Committee and would include one member from the Public Works Committee and Natural Resources Committee, up to three community members appointed by the county administrator and various county staff members, including the finance director, public works director, land and water management director, planning and parks director, transit superintendent, University of Wisconsin-Extension director and building superintendents from the Administrative Center, Justice Center and Lasata Care Center.

Since the creation of the Energy Action Team, the county has reduced electrical costs by 5%, or $37,370, and gas costs by 37%, or $142,441.
