Port soccer has trouble finding the net

A few missed opportunities sent the Port Washington High School girls’ soccer team to road shutouts in its last two games.

The Pirates on May 1 lost 4-0 to rival Cedarburg.

“We had three great looks at the goal in the first half, and if any of those got converted it becomes a different game,” coach Eric Liebergen said.

Maddie Wehner narrowly missed on a free kick, and Tess Schueller “got behind the defense and slotted one past the keeper but just wide,” Liebergen said.

“Katie Tyree made a back post run and had a one touch redirection just wide as well.”

Liebergen praised the play of Ella Mueller, Cami Melin and Molly Fyhrlund.

“I liked our ball movement and energy in this game. We are just injury-riddled in our defense,” he said.

Against Slinger a day later, Port gave up a goal in the 70th minute in a 1-0 loss.

Liebergen said notable performances were given by Claire Holtebeck, Madison Zwicker and Lilly Clark, and goakeeper Kaytlin Kassens “had an amazing save in the first half.”

The Pirates, 8-4-1 overall and 1-2 in the North Shore Conference, were scheduled to host Hartford at 7 p.m. Tuesday, play at non-conference foes Waukesha South on Thursday and Random Lake on Saturday and host West Bend East at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14.

Grafton, 7-1-1 and 3-0 in the NSC, was scheduled to host 4-0 Nicolet on Tuesday for first place in the league. The Black Hawks play at Cedarburg on Thursday and host Hartford at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14.

The team’s April 30 game at Whitefish Bay was postponed due to weather.
