Change of scenery saves a beloved fundraiser

The rain fell but the bags still flew thanks to a decision to move the annual Bags 4 Buczek cornhole tournament from its outdoor venue at Harbor Hills Recreation Center in Port Washington to the indoor gyms at Gateway Sport Academy in Saukville on Saturday, Sept. 19. The event, billed as one of the largest cornhole tournaments in Ozaukee County and organized by Mel’s Charities, drew a crowd of competitors (top photo) and plenty of volunteers, including Port Washington High School students (bottom right) Logan Wysocki, Andrew Girga, Holden Moran, Colton Pease, Ben Theisen, Garrett Hoffmann, Erick Friedenberg and Mason Helmeid. Luckily for Jackson and Hope Struebing (bottom left), Bags 4 Buczek shirts came in a wide variety of sizes. The event is named for Tyler Buczek, who died in a drowning accident in September 2012 just before beginning his freshman year at Port Washington High School, and has raised thousands of dollars for Port High scholarships. The tournament now benefits Mel’s Charities. Photos by Sam Arendt
