Shuster picks up where he left off in mountain biking

Ozaukee’s mountain bike teams kicked off the Wisconsin Interscholastic Cycling League racing season last Saturday at the Bluff Bash near Marshfield, with 29 middle and high school riders earning three podium finishes.

The program has grown to 78 riders this year, competing in middle and high school divisions.

Sophomore Beckett Schuster of Port Washington led the way. After winning every freshman race he entered last season, Schuster won the junior varsity 3 division.

Cedarburg’s Julian Suechting added another podium with a third-place finish in the freshman division.

The team’s third podium came from Simon Clegg, who finished third in the middle school 2 division’s two-lap race.

Coaches said the performance of the entire team was equally encouraging. Nearly 30 riders picked up racing experience.

“Congrats to the coaches, coordinators, volunteers and parents that helped make the weekend a success,” Ozaukee Mountain Bike Team coach Whitney Teska said. “We’re looking forward to Minooka in two weeks where we hope to have an even stronger team turnout for the festival closest to home.”

The Minooka Mania Festival in Waukesha is Sept. 18 to 20.
