Port has no problem filling the courts this season

Port Washington High School boys’ tennis coach Keely Welton took over the girls’ program this fall, and she’s got plenty of players — 47.

Welton, in her eighth year of coaching, and Jennifer Garven had coached the boys the past two seasons. Now with the girls’ team, they have two assistants — Desiree Figarino and Shane McConahy.

Against Grafton on Aug. 25, Port lost, 5-2. No. 2 singles player Mayah Richards beat Angelique Rana, 6-1, 6-1, and No. 4 singles player Allyson Schlehlein beat Morgan Ellis, 6-2, 6-2.

On Aug. 26, Port swept Lake Country Lutheran at home. At No. 1 singles, Leena Suddendorf won, 6-3, 6-2. Richards won, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. At No. 1 doubles, Alaina Elgin and Jessica Anewenter won, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 2 doubles, Clara Friedenberg and Taylor Penegor won, 6-2, 6-3.

Port lost, 4-3, at Germantown last Thursday. Schlehlein won, 6-4, 6-4. Elgin/Anewenter won, 7-5, 6-4, and Jocelyn Schlereth and Sami Siesco at No. 3 doubles won in a tiebreaker.

Port plays at West Bend West on Thursday, Sept. 3, and at Kewaskum on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
