LETTER: Aroused citizens gave Grafton officials lesson in public trust

At the  Aug. 3 Grafton Village Board meeting, the fate of the Bridge Street Dam and the iconic millpond was showcased. And what a show it was. Impassioned speeches, a bit of comedic banter, candid words of criticism that spoke truth, and sentiments of love for this community echoed throughout the auditorium.

Yet beneath the positive energy lies deep frustration with our local officials’ handling of the broken dam gate situation. The delays and stonewalling tactics have taken a toll. The faith and trust we placed in our elected officials has severely eroded.

Transparency and trust have a cause-and-effect relationship. When questions go unanswered, logic is dismissed, and radio silence is your modus operandi, people conclude the worst. Suspicions abound, reputations suffer.

Village of Grafton officials, it’s your move. Deliver on your public hearing promise. Fix the gate immediately. Give the people of our beloved hometown a reason to hope you will act with transparency and in our best interest, as we have expressed.
