LETTER: ‘A great unraveling’ is going on in republic’s 250th year

To Ozaukee Press:

This past weekend has been an American Fourth of July unlike any other.

At home, Trump is using the incredible power of the American presidency to blackmail and swindle his way to enormous personal riches, while overseas he is directing American economic and military power in a colossal international shakedown of foreign leaders—in his own self interest and at the unthinkable expense of our national blood and treasure.

On this 250th year of our republic we are witnessing a great unraveling of virtually everything Americans have been taught to believe over the past two and a half centuries.

Whatever the so-called MAGA movement originally claimed to espouse, it has now been co-opted by an even more sinister and corrupt movement under the banner of “Christian nationalism.”

At first, and to the uninformed, the expression may sound pious and even patriotic. But those of us old enough to remember National Socialism hear it entirely differently. We recognize it to be the antithesis of what it appears to mean.

Several hundred masked so-called Christian Nationals marched in Washington this past weekend ahead of the quarter millennial celebration of the American democratic vision. This belligerent display—not unlike Nazi wannabes marching and rallying in U.S. cities before WWII—should shock the conscience of any true patriot.

The sick image of Trump in his first term triumphantly thrusting the Holy Bible upside down and backwards above his head while urging the police and military to shoot protesters should forever remain the iconic image of the movement.

If America were truly a Christian nation, every pastor and priest in every church on every Sunday would be pounding on their pulpits and howling against the transparent blasphemy of Donald Trump.
