PHOTO OP-ED: A bathing egret displays its glorious plummage

Allan Block of Port Washington, who made this remarkable photograph on an early morning walk in September, described the scene he encountered: “A rising sun highlighted the spots still to be cleaned and the feathers still to be oiled on this great egret. Daily grooming and feather maintenance are important for all birds. Oil distributed from an oil gland on their body keeps feathers in top notch flight shape. A small backwater of the Milwaukee River, Villa Grove Park in Mequon, provided a good location for these rituals. She/he granted me plenty of time for pictures. Then the egret was off to find food I can only presume.”
