CG-Belgium wins tourney

Cedar Grove-Belgium High School boys’ soccer coach Kyle Schultz thinks it might be 2008 — when he was in high school — when the Rockets last won their home tournament.

That streak came to a close on Saturday with two shootout victories to take the title.

The Rockets tied Providence Academy at 1 before winning, 4-3, in a shootout. Keeper Landon Altheimer sealed the win by making the final penalty kick.

The Rockets outshot their opponent, 19-2, but couldn’t put enough home in regulation to seal the deal.

The Rockets then tied Sheboygan South at zero before winning, 3-1, in a shootout.

Altheimer made a save on the same player twice — once during the game and once in the shootout. He made two saves that helped win the match. Juan Castellon, Erick Bautista-Garcia and Adrian Perez each made their kicks.

“It was exciting,” Schultz said.

Altheimer had two highlight-reel saves, he said, including one in which he was fully stretched out to keep the ball from the goal.

“Landon had a heck of a game,” he said.

Schultz also praised another senior.

“Cameron Holle had a really good showing for us,” he said.

The team, he said, just practiced penalty kicks.

“Oddly enough, we just happened to on Thursday. We just ran through it, two rounds. Landon wasn’t even there, getting ready for football Thursday night,” Schultz said.

He and his team differ on their preferred ending to games.

“Kids always want a PK shootout no matter how much it stresses me out,” he said.

Last Friday, the Rockets beat Mayville, 2-0. Bautista-Garcia and Eischen each scored. Castellon and Thomas Wiesner each had an assist.

The Rockets’ defense has been the key to their success.

“That’s been kinda the magic so far this year. We’ve only allowed nine goals, and five came in just two games,” Schultz said.

The Rockets on Sept. 23 lost to Kohler, 2-1. Castellon had a goal and Eischen had an assist.

The Rockets, 7-2-1 overall and 4-1-2 in the Big East Conference, were to play at Grafton on Tuesday, Sept. 30. They host Random Lake/Ozaukee on Thursday, Oct. 2, and play at Sheboygan Christian on Tuesday, Oct. 7.

Port Washington lost to Sheboygan South, 1-0, before winning three straight in the tournament. Port beat Providence Academy, 3-0; Green Bay West, 8-0; and NWLPA, 3-0.

Against West, Scotty Bennett and Grayson Allen each had two goals. George Pasko, Tyson Blum, Xavier Styles and Ian Merry each had one. Bennett had two assists and Pasko, Sawyer Crain and Dean Williams each had one.

Against NWLPA, Blum, Bennett and Brady Knous scored. Pasko had two assists and Kalin Mundt had one.

Last Thursday, Port beat West Bend West, 4-2, to stay in the Glacier Trails Conference race.

Bennett had a hat trick and Mundt scored. Knous and Angel Ramirez each had an assist.

Port tied Sheboygan South, 1-1, on Sept. 23.

Port, 12-3-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the conference, plays at Kettle Moraine Lutheran (5-1-1 GTC) on Thursday, Oct. 2, and hosts Kewaskum (4-2-1) on Thursday, Oct. 9.

Grafton lost, 3-0, at Nicolet on Sept. 24 and 4-3, to West Bend West on Saturday. The Hawks play at Living Word Lutheran on Friday, Oct. 3.
