County may seek grants for multimillion dollar Highway O reconstruction in Saukville

Ozaukee County officials are exploring potential grant opportunities that would pay for reconstruction of Highway O­ — Main Street and Green Bay Avenue —from the Village of Saukville’s southern border north to Highway 33 in the downtown triangle area.

County Public Works Director Jon Edgren said he expects to submit the grant application in September.

Construction wouldn’t start until 2030, he said.

He told supervisors on the county Public Works Committee last week that his “ballpark”estimate puts the cost of the project at about $4 million, although no specific analysis has been done yet. 

“The road is in poor condition, but also has more significant issues with failing curb and gutter,” Edgren said in a memo.

He added that there are utilities that also need to be replaced by the village and would not be covered by the grant.

The grant would cover 80% of the road construction costs, with the county and the village sharing the remainder, he said.

Highway D in the Village of Belgium was rebuilt in 2013 under a similar arrangement, he said.
