Riveredge programs include fishing event

A variety of activities, from fishing to photography, are planned at Riveredge Nature Center in the Town of Saukville during the coming weeks.

Family Fishing Fun will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8.

Riveredge educators and professional angler Matt Smith will teach participants about Wisconsin rules and regulations, safety skills, identification of common fish species, gear, knots and how to cast the perfect line. 

Fish that are caught will be releasee and all equipment will be provided.

Children must be accompanied by an adult, and those younger than 16 do not need a fishing license to participate.

Advance registration is required by midnight Aug. 21.

The Riveredge Photo Club will meet in person and online from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26.

  A “Stroll with a Naturalist” program on edible and medicinal plants will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28. Those attending should meet in the parking lot.

“Wild Plants of Wisconsin: Edible, Medicinal, Deadly” will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2.

The program includes a hike to see some of Wisconsin’s most amazing plants and learn the basics of plant safety in wild places.

The program is for people ages 14 and older. The cost is $10 for Riveredge members and $15 for nonmembers.

Riveredge’s Family Nature Club will hold its first meeting of the season from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8.

The session will include time to catch crayfish, play games and enjoy a potluck dinner and  s’mores.

The free club for families with children younger than 18 is intended to facilitate outdoor, environmental education-based experiences.

A Thursday, Sept. 11, “Stroll with a Naturalist” from 10 to 11:30 a.m. will include a tour of the sturgeon rearing facility at Riveredge.

Those attending will learn about the sturgeon, see them up-close and learn about the success of the program to return sturgeon to the lake.
