Storytimes, club meetings to kick off new year of events at library

The Oscar Grady Library in Saukville will kick off the new year with a host of programs that begin Jan. 9 with weekly storytimes.

The storytimes with Miss Julie are geared toward children 2 to 5 years old and include rhymes, silly songs, dancing and fun stories.

Morning storytimes are from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays Jan. 9 through Feb. 20.

Evening storytimes are from 6 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Jan. 10 through Feb. 21. Children can come dressed in pajamas and bring stuffed animals.

Storytimes are free. Registration is encouraged and can be done in person or by calling the library at (262) 284-6022.

The library’s Lego Club, which offers after-school activities for children, also meets on Wednesdays from Jan. 10 through Feb. 21.

From 3:45 to 4:45 p.m., children will have an opportunity to make their own creations or spin the Lego wheel for an idea. Participants will show off their creations, which may be chosen for display at the library.

The club is suitable for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. The event is free and registration is not required.

Recipe Club members will share savory soups from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Jan. 11, in the library’s community room.

In addition to bringing their favorite soup, participants are asked to bring the recipe to share.

The Book Club will discuss “The Plot” by Jean Hanff Korelitz when it meets from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, in the community room.

A New York Times Bestseller, “The Plot” follows Jacob Finch Bonner, a once promising novelist who is teaching in a third-rate master of fine arts program when he hears the plot of a novel one of his students is writing.

When Bonner learns the student has died, he publishes his story as his own and is enjoying all the fame and wealth that came with it when he receives an email. “You’re a thief,” it says.

Copies of the book are available at the library’s circulation desk and through the Monarch Library System catalog.

On Wednesday, Jan. 1, the library will kick off a five-month Wellness Talks initiative made possible by its partnership with Advocate Aurora Healthcare.

Social isolation and loneliness will be the topic of the first talk from 11 a.m. to noon in the community room. Kelly Barboza, Ozaukee County community nurse educator, will discuss the importance of social interaction for overall health.

The library’s Teen Advisory Board will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, in the community room.

The board, which is comprised of teenage volunteers, works on projects that benefit the library and community and takes an active leadership role in promoting and implementing programs as well as advocating for youth services.

The Teen Advisory Board is looking for members. Applications are available at www.oscargradylibrary.org/teens/.

The library is also launching a five-month Financial Wise series through a partnership with Kohler Credit Union from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25.

The series will focus on teaching the essentials of financial literacy and begin with a program on how to create and use a budget to become financially secure.
