Scout joins Lions Club in mission to help people see

Port Washington High School sophomore Eric Krentz built five eyeglass donation boxes for the Saukville Lions as part of his Eagle Scout project.

Krentz partnered with Don Clark, owner of Village Printer and president of the Saukville Lions Club, to create something “a little more appealing,” for the Lions’ ongoing eyeglass collection boxes.

“In the past, we just had a cardboard bucket or five gallon plastic tub for the eyeglasses. Now, we have something that looks great, is a lot more appealing and brings a little more attention to the cause,” Clark said.

The glasses collected in these boxes are used for the Lions’ Eyeglass Mission, which recycles eyeglasses and distributes them in developing areas that have little or no access to eye health services.

“It’s one of those things where people don’t know what they’ve got until they don’t have it,” Clark said. “I’ve had people come to me in tears and say, ‘I’ve been using my mom’s glasses for the past nine years, but now I have my own glasses.’ You don’t know there’s people out there in your own community until you meet them.”
