Egan’s half dozen hammers Reedsville:

Now when Gabe Egan talks about a six pack, it won’t be about abs or soda.

Egan, a senior running back for the Cedar Grove-Belgium High School football team, scored six touchdowns at Reedsville in a 42-6 rout last Friday.

Coach Dan Schreurs said one of his offense’s goals this season is to get the ball in Egan’s hands, and senior quarterback Colton Sellin did that. Egan caught seven balls for 171 yards and five touchdowns.

He ran five times for 57 yards and another score.

“Reedsville never really adjusted to Gabe,” Schreurs said.

“They stacked the box to stop the run, which is what we anticipated after rushing for 400 yards on Howards Grove. They left Gabe alone in the slot, and we kept hitting him.”

Egan scored on passes of 13, 9 and 40 yards in the first quarter, and 17 and 77 yards in the second.

Most passes were of the short and quick variety, which made it easier on the offensive line, and Egan, whose favorite superhero is the Hulk, took it from there.

“Mason Navis was definitely the key to Gabe’s success out there. He was making that one block, and Gabe would make another one miss,” Schreurs said.

It was 36-6 at halftime. Egan scored on a 23-yard run in the third quarter, and soon afterward Schreurs began to pull his starters.

It was the first time this season that the Rockets’ offense did exactly what it wanted to do.

“If you’re going to try to stop our run, we’re going to get outside with Gabe. If you’re going to try to stop Gabe, we’re going to run up the middle on you,” Schreurs said.

Sellin, whose favorite fruit is watermelon, went 10-for-16 passing for 204 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions, and he ran five times for 30 yards.

Billy Navis ran six times for 54 yards, and Deven Soerens had 27 yards on seven carries.

On the other side of the ball, defensive coordinator Jason Klein “had a great scheme,” Schreurs said.

Reedsville, the defending Division 7 state champion, lost a huge senior class to graduation and got a new coach. It wasn’t the same team the Rockets beat 28-18 at home last season, but the Panthers are still formidable, Schreurs said.

Rocket coaches chewed out the defense for poor tackling against Howards Grove and ran tackling drills last week, and the team responded.

“They were probably 90% run — real quick hitting, straight-forward dives,” Schreurs said of Reedsville’s offense. “Diego Morales was doing a great job plugging things up. Everything on the outside, Billy Navis was lighting up. The defense played at a higher level than what we’ve seen all year.”

Navis, a defensive end, and linebacker Jordan Platner each had 10 tackles, and Morales on the line and Soerens at linebacker each had eight. Linebacker Joe Schoeder had six tackles, and cornerback Gaven Davies had five. Navis had a sack, and tackle Matthew Navis forced a fumble.

Logan Navis went 4-for-5 on extra points, and Sellin had a punt of 55 yards.

The Rockets went to 2-0 in the Big East and 2-2 overall. Reedsville is 1-1 in the conference and 3-1 overall.

On Friday, the Rockets head to 0-4 Manitowoc Lutheran, which has lost, 34-0, to Reedsville and 40-14 to Howards Grove. The Rockets beat  both those teams.

“They don’t play like they’re 0-4. They’re aggressive and hard hitting,” Schreurs said.
