YOUR PIX: There’s no escape from the world’s fastest bird

Michael Majewski’s spectacular close-up of one of Port Washington’s peregrine falcons in flight with its songbird prey clutched in its deadly talons is a classic portrayal of an exquisitely skilled raptor. It is possible that the smaller bird met its fate in a collision with the falcon diving at 200 mph or more. That is the speed bird experts say peregrines can reach as they descend from high in the sky to make their kills. The bird in Michael’s photo lives in a shelter on a roof of the We Energies power plant that has been home for peregrine falcons for a number of years. Ozaukee Press has published photos of their cuddly chicks, but as the unfortunate songbird found out, there is nothing cuddly about the adults.
