Wrestlers getting experience

The WIAA recently allowed multiple-team wrestling matches, and area competitors are jumping at the opportunity.

Port Washington High School on Jan. 6 hosted Waukesha West and Wauwatosa East. The Pirates beat West, 54-27, and lost to East, 43-33.

The match of the night came at 170 pounds when Port’s Lucas Schumacher faced East’s Crosby Schlosser. Schumacher took sixth at 182 pounds at the Division 2 state meet last year and Schlosser was fifth at 160.

Schlosser got the better of the match, winning a 12-0 major decision.

“He’s really good. It’s just good that two guys who medaled at the state tournament wrestle each other,” Port coach Angelo LaRosa said. “It’s always more fun when you win.”

Four Pirates earned pins. J.D. Brahm pinned Aden Orth at 182 pounds in 3 minutes, 41 seconds. Nick Bensen at 220 pinned Steven Henry in 1:02. Ever Armendariz at 285 pinned Jonathan Dorow in 54 seconds, and

Nick Gonzales at 120 pinned Carter Henschel in 1:41.

At 126 pounds, Kaiden Schumacher beat Darrin Parve in a 15-0 technical fall in 3:30.

At 138 pounds, Aiden Drotzur beat Collin Chesak in a 17-8 major decision.

The Suns scored 22 points in the final four matches to pull out the win.

“East had a really nice team the last few years. We’ve got to get better,” LaRosa said.

Against West, six Pirates earned pins. Lucas Schumacher at 170 pounds pinned Jackson Berg in 3:04. Brahm at 182 pinned Nelson Luecke in 2:39. Shem Castillo at 195 pinned Justin Liepski in 26 seconds,

Armendariz pinned Gunnar Hanson in 1:42, Brady Krueger pinned Jaxon Lawrence in 52 seconds, Drotzuer pinned Cole Fredrick in 1:46 and Brandon Grabowski pinned Brady Grisar in 1:20.

On Wednesday, Port was scheduled to wrestle host Nicolet, Cedarburg and Whitefish Bay. Port hosts a quadrangular meet on Wednesday, Jan. 20.

Grafton goes 2-1 in quadrangular meet

Grafton’s young team on Jan. 6 beat Cedarburg and Homestead and lost to host Slinger.

“The guys that we have are hard working. It’s nice for those guys to get those wins as a team and individually,” coach Mike Dodge said.

The Black Hawks knocked off Cedarburg, 36-27. Of four matches wrestled, the Hawks won three.

James Volkmann at 120 pounds beat Hunter Kasten, 4-2. Jacob Betla at 160 beat Aaron Pokel, 10-4. Nathan Krause at 195 pinned Isaac Moburg.

Grafton beat Homestead, 40-36, winning five of six matches wrestled.

John Olmr at 220 pounds pinned Austin Heffernan in 5:59. Volkmann at 120 pinned Brenden Canapa in 1:27. Cameron Jacobs at 152 pinned Patrick Berger in 5:45. Belta at 160 pinned Danny Leszczynski in 35 seconds, and Nikita Eksler at 182 beat Deven Schmitz in a 12-2 major decision.

Eksler’s match sealed the win for the Hawks, and Dodge said Olmr’s pin at 220 “was critical.”

Slinger beat Grafton, 84-0, behind six pins and eight forfeits.

Dodge said Volkmann, a freshman, did well all night long, along with Eksler.

“Both these guys are hard workers in the room,” he said.

Betla and Cameron Jacobs, Dodge said, are also having solid seasons.

Grafton was to wrestle in a quadrangular meet at West Bend East on Wednesday and at a quad at Homestead on Jan. 20.

CG-Belgium drops two matches

Rival Random Lake was again too much for Cedar Grove-Belgium at Denmark last Thursday.

The Rams won, 48-27.

“Random’s tough once again. We gave it a good run again,” coach Trevor Peterson said. “It was a closer dual than the score showed.”

The Rockets won five matches. Diego Morales at 285 pounds pinned Jordan Arendt in 4:33. Jesse Burg at 106 pinned Grant Gibson in 2:28. Cael Erickson at 152 pinned Toren Vandenbush in 1:02. Dylan Teunissen at

170 pinned Daniel Mendoza in 1:24. Mason Hoopman at 120 beat Tanner Birenbaum, 7-2.

“That’s a big, big win. Tanner’s a tough kid,” Peterson said.

The Rockets lost to Denmark, ranked 12th in Division 2, 48-28. Burg and Hoopman earned pins. Erickson won a 15-6 major decision. Teunissen won a 13-6 decision and Markus Ramirez at 195 pounds won a sudden victory, 4-2.
“It would have been nice to win but we got some good matches,” Peterson said

The Rockets host a triangular meet on Thursday.

Ozaukee pulls out close victory

Ozaukee beat Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah/Howards Grove, 34-27, at Oostburg last Thursday.

Mya Delleree at 113 pounds pinned Karissa Entringer in 33 seconds. Efran Altamirano won a 12-0 major decision over Kyle Jens at 126 pounds, and Philip McLarty pinned Emma Feider.

“In a few of our matches, we let our opponents control the pace. We were aggressive but not aggressive enough for me,” coach Kevin Koepke said.

Ozaukee was to compete in a quad in Kewaskum on Thursday.
