Becca Schauer admits setting the all-time basketball scoring record at Ozaukee High School was never her plan.
“I remember writing that my one high school goal was the 1,000 point club, and I never would have even dreamed it was a possibility,” she said.
But Schauer reached quadruple digits in scoring last season. Then, the Warriors’ record of 1,483 points by 2004 graduate Courtnie Paulus looked to be within reach.
It took until the final game of her high school career. Schauer needed seven points heading into the Division 4 regional playoff game against Cedar Grove-Belgium.
Schauer tied the record in the second half on a tough shot inside, and with more than 14 minutes to play calmly dribbled up the court to set up the offense.
Sometimes known to shoot a quick three-pointer, Schauer let one fly from the top of the key. The ball went through the net and the crowd nearly went through the roof.
“I wasn’t really thinking about it, to be honest. When I heard everybody go crazy, I was like, ‘OK, let’s play, let’s go,’” she said.
The record, she said, has “just a lot of hard work behind all that. It means a lot.”
Schauer finished her career with 1,497 points.
She didn’t set the mark because she was a ball hog. Schauer also broke the school’s all-time assists record, finishing with 453. Kaitlyn Thill, a 2010 graduate, had 418.
That mark, she said, was “another big goal.”
She would have gone for the rebounds record too, but at 5 feet, 6 inches tall, “I’m a little short for that,” she said with a laugh.
Schauer also broke the record for most points in a game. Schauer, Michelle Thill in 1998, Paulus in 2003 and Nicole Bundy in 2005 each scored 35 in one contest.
Schauer poured in 38 points at Reedsville on Feb. 15.
“What a privilege to coach her. She gave 110% all the time,” coach Tim Wolff said.
Schauer hasn’t decided where she will attend college or what she will study.
