This week in history:

Perfection on the rubber and tee; park dedicated, legendary coach honored

An eclectic collection of sports milestones occurred this week in history.

Here are some highlights from the annals of Ozaukee Press:

1980: Rich Volesky of the Modern Equipment team pitched a perfect game in Port Washington Men’s Open Softball League.

Harbor Hills sent 21 batters to the plate. None reached first base. Modern Equipment won, 3-0.

“This is a remarkable feat in any baseball or softball game,” John DeMerit, head of the Port Washington Parks and Recreation Department, said. “But in a slow-pitch softball game, it is almost unbelievable.”

1990: Saukville’s Schowalter Park softball complex was dedicated. Ron Schowalter, whose family donated the land for the park, threw out the first pitch. Saukville Village President Jeffrey Knight spoke at the ceremony.

The festivities were held before the championship game of the Saukville Softball Association’s Class D tournament. The Brock-White team of New Berlin beat Lauer’s of Grafton.

2005: Port Washington High School wrestling coach Duffy Brelsford got a call from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame welcoming him as a new inductee.

At that time, Brelsford won a state title coaching in California and the 1984 Wisconsin team title with the Pirates. He had a 180-108 dual-meet record, nine conference titles, four regional titles and one sectional title.

2010: Adeline Schmitz, 83, of Port Washington watched her tee shot sail toward the hole on No. 17 at Hawthorne Hills Golf Course in the Town of Saukville. The ball landed just in front of the green, hopped forward and rolled into the cup, 102 yards away. It was Schmitz’s first hole in one. She used a 7-wood.

“I just screamed. I couldn’t believe it,” Schmitz said.

Oddly enough, it wasn’t the first hole in one on No. 17 that summer.

Vicki Kaiser shot an ace on the par-3 on June 9.

2015: Dan Schreurs was hired to replace Chris Zablocki as Cedar Grove-Belgium High School football coach. He has amassed a 49-11 record in five years, won two conference titles and led the team to the state title game in 2016.
