This week in local sports action over the years included state titles and a baseball brawl between rivals. Here’s a look back in time from the annals of Ozaukee Press.
1990: The Port Washington High School girls’ soccer team, led by coach Bob Thompson, won its state quarterfinal match over Waukesha North, 2-1, in Madison.
Erica Corbin scored on a rebound for the Pirates’ only goal before the shootout. Scorers in the shootout were Maria Halverson, Jamie Lucas, Gretchen Taucher, Christine Lowney and Nikki Basile.
Keeper Becki Granrath made a save on North’s fifth kick, giving Port the shootout win, 5-4.
n The Port Washington and Grafton high school baseball teams got into a bench-clearing brawl in a 14-7 Black Hawks’ victory in eight innings.
Grafton was down, 6-4, in the top of the seventh. Bill Tschanz walked and Scott Wilderdink singled. Christian Larsen clocked a game-tying triple.
Larsen later tried to score on a suicide squeeze. Port catcher Tyler Kunz scooped up the ball and waited for him ahead of home plate. Larsen crashed into Kunz to try to knock the ball loose, and Kunz tossed him to the ground and punched him in the face multiple times.
The benches cleared. Larsen and Kunz were ejected. Port coach Don Pruefer and Grafton coach Dennis Goecke confirmed it was one of the worst fights they have seen in high school athletics.
2000: Grafton’s Gary Pritchard retired in style after 34 years of coaching, holding the Division 2 track and field championship trophy in La Crosse.
Grafton, the favorite to win, scored 70 points to Sauk Prairie’s 53. The 1,600-meter relay team of seniors Jon Lubner, Jeff Robinson, Jason Klug and Dan Murray set a Division 2 record in 3 minutes, 22.95 seconds.
n Four Port boys set a school record in the 400 relay. Joel Multerer, Mark  Noll, Dan Gahan and Bob Makoutz ran the race in 44.5 seconds at the Manitowoc sectional.
It broke the old mark of 44.8 set in 1985 by Khoi Tennies, Brad Mayer, Kelly Phillips and Jeff Weyker.
n Port senior Kacia Klopp was chosen as the track and field team’s most valuable player. She set a school record in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 1 inch and tied a high jump record with a 5-5. She already held the 100 record in 12.7 seconds set earlier in her career.
n The Cedar Grove-Belgium girls set a school record and win the Division 3 3,200 relay in La Crosse. Jamie Obbink, Heidi Brill, Allison Molter and Erin Meinen finished in 2:27.
2010: Grafton High School’s Conor Fisk tossed a perfect game against Brown Deer in a five-inning, 10-0 victory.
Fisk whiffed 12 of the 15 batters he faced. The other three grounded out. He threw 61 pitches. Catcher Skyler Bohn blocked a couple of third strikes to preserve his pitcher’s perfection.
2019: Ozaukee’s baseball team beat Sturgeon Bay, 13-2, in the Division 4 sectional final to earn a trip to state.
Noah Miller had two doubles, and Simon Bares had two singles and a double. Brent Hoffmann had a two-RBI double. Logan Bell had two singles and three RBI. Mitch Weyker walked twice.
Hoffmann pitched two innings and Miller finished.
n Ozaukee’s Delanie McFadden won the Division 3 200 in 25.13 seconds at the state meet in La Crosse. She also helped the 800 relay team break its own school record in 1:46.34. Other members were Ashlee Mueller, Brianna Bustamante and Becca Schauer.
The 1,600 relay team of Mueller, Bustamante, Amy Hoffmann and Schauer broke the school record in 4:10.14.
The 3,200 relay team of Hoffmann, Greta Klas, Kelley Large and Mueller broke the school record with a 10:07.13.
