This week was full of local sports highlights throughout the years. Here’s a look back in time from the annals of Ozaukee Press.

1980: It was announced that five Port Washington bowlers would be the first men inducted into the Ozaukee County Bowling Hall of Fame.

They included Arnie Philipps, Bob Bley Sr. and his father Al Bley, Louis Bathke and Ervin Hoge.

Philipps and Bob Bley Sr. were the only living members of the group at the time.

• The Cedar Grove High School boys won the Central Lakeshore Conference track and field title with 110 points. Oostburg was second with 75.5.

The Rockets had two first-place finishes, six seconds and five thirds.

The winners were Jim Meinen in discus with a throw of 18 feet, 1 inch, and the 880-yard relay team of Mike Hilbelink, Kurt Schueller, Steve Veldhorst and Craig Meinen.

1990: The Port Washington High School girls’ soccer team qualified for state for the first time in program history.

The beat Hartford in a 2-1 shootout victory in thick fog.

Freshman Nikki Basile kicked the game-winning goal. With the shootout knotted at 3-3, she scored and a Hartford player followed with a miss.

The Port coach was Bob Thompson.

•  Ozaukee High School senior Kate Urness qualified for the state Class C track and field meet in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and as a member of the 800 relay team.

At the sectional, Urness won the 100 in 12.54 seconds and 200 in 26.33. The relay team, which included Michele Kraus, Michelle Sutton and Ingrid Buntrock, was second in 1:52.58.

2000: Grafton High School sophomore Tom Hawkins won the North Shore Conference Golf championship.

Hawkins shot a three-over-par 76 (38-38) at a windy and rain-soaked Kettle Hills. It was so wet that bunkers were removed from play.

Homestead won the meet with a four-player score 333 strokes. Grafton was second with 336.

Homestead ended up winning the conference with 47 points. Grafton was second with 38.5.

2012: Grafton qualified five entries for the Division 1 state track and field meet in La Crosse, led by a school record.

The 1,600-meter relay team of sophomore Erick Huertas, senior Kevin Wegner, sophomore Patrick Tobianski and junior Marcus Hill won the event in 3:20, topping the old school record by two seconds and turning in the fastest sectional time in the state.

2013: Ozaukee’s Josh Werner, on his last attempt in the high jump at the sectional, bumped the bar, causing it to wobble for a heart-stopping 15 seconds.

But the bar held and Werner qualified for the Division 3 state meet by clearing 5-10.

Dieringer broke her own school record in the 400 with a 59.45, qualifying her for state. She also qualified in the long jump, 100 and 200.
