Watercolorist is center’s April artist of the month

Watercolorist Nancy Montgomery is the April artist of the month at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.

Montgomery didn’t start her career as an artist. She graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree from Stephens College and pursued a career in interior design.

Her first exposure to watercolors in college brought her little success or love for the medium, but her passion for the medium bloomed one summer when she picked up a $17 dime store watercolor kit and decided to paint en plein air.

“The medium that I had feared became my new passion,” said Montgomery.

She enjoys plein air painting, painting in the field and adding finishing touches in her studio, referencing sketches and digital images for scene and lighting details.

Currently, Montgomery is experimenting with painting interior room compositions.

She will teach a 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, class in the basics of watercolors at the center.

The class is intended to help painters acquire or build upon watercolor techniques through a step-by-step process of taking a line drawing to a value drawing to a transparent watercolor painting.

Demonstrations and applications of basic watercolor painting materials and techniques will be the heart of the workshop. The fee of $38 for center members and $46 for non-members includes supplies, but participants may bring their favorite materials.

For registration or more information, contact the center at 262-375-3676 or visit cedarburgculturalcenter.org/artistresidence.html.

The center at W62 N546 Washington Ave. is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
