Volunteers sought for annual crane count
Volunteers are being sought to help with the annual spring crane count, which will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14.
The event is part of the 43rd Midwest Crane Count, sponsored by the International Crane Foundation.
Sandhill cranes, which had nearly disappeared from the state, have fully recovered and are slowly spreading into nearby states, and observations of these birds can lend insight into other threatened crane species.
Anyone who is interested in volunteering is asked to contact their county coordinator a week or two before the count. Contact information can be found at www.cranecount.org or by calling Sara Gavney Moore at (608) 356-9462, extension 155.
The Ozaukee County coordinator is Lee Arhelger, who can be emailed at 199lee@337lee.com.
