Village street repair bids higher than expected
The Saukville Village Board on Tuesday accepted a bid for repair work on West Bucktrout and South Tower streets on the village’s west side, part of which will cost more than expected.
However, officials said they can offset the cost overrun through other moves.
The work will include pulverizing and repaving Bucktrout Street east of Colonial Parkway and Tower Street north to West Dekora Street.
The board accepted the bid of $248,688 to Stark Pavement Corp. of Milwaukee. It was the lowest of three bids but higher than the expected low bid of about $220,000 due to higher prices for asphalt and gravel, board members were told.
Curbs, gutters, driveway approaches and sidewalks also will be installed where needed and for which residents will be assessed.
Officials estimated the assessments would total $14,844, but the amount for that work came in $8,582 more than expected.
Instead of adding to the amount residents would be assessed, a representative with the engineering firm Ruekert & Mielke Inc. told board members savings at least equal to that amount could be realized during construction.
Wheelchair ramps will be installed at corners, but residents will not be assessed for those.
The project also will include installing storm sewers on Church Street that will help alleviate occasional flooding in that area, officials said.
Work is expected to start in early spring and be completed by Aug. 1.
Residents will receive letters letting them know the exact construction schedule.
Residents will be able to drive through the construction zone while work is being done except for some brief periods, officials said.
