Trash time won’t change in village

The Village of Fredonia is preparing residents for changes in garbage and recycling pickup as it will transition from its current provider, Waste Management, to Harter’s Lakeside Disposal at the start of the new year.

While pickup days will remain the same, recycling pickup will change from every week to every other week. Continuing weekly recycling pickup under the Harter’s contract would cost the village an additional $300 each month.

Residents will have the option to lease an additional recycling bin for $65 if they wish, ask neighbors if they have additional space in their recycling bin or hold onto recyclables until the following pickup date.

A village announcement notified residents that placing recyclables into garbage carts violates state and village ordinances. Garbage may not be emptied if workers notice recyclables in garbage bins, the announcement advised.

The Harter’s contract will go into effect Jan. 1, 2022, with the first pick up being Jan. 7.

Waste Management is scheduled to pick up its waste bins on Dec. 31. Residents are asked to leave their bins at the curb and off of the road for pickup. Depending on snowfall, an area of the snow bank may need to be cleared for the bins to be placed in the proper location.

New recycling and garbage bins will be delivered before Jan. 7 with documents attached to them listing pickup days, Harter’s contact information and other information about the service.

The Harter’s contract is slightly more expensive than the Waste Management contract.

Harter’s quoted the village a monthly fee of $9.29 per unit for garbage collection, four cents more than Waste Management, and $2.90 per unit for recycling, 39 cents more than Waste Management.

 Harter’s did come in lower than GFL Environmental Inc., which quoted the village monthly fees of $10.20 per unit for garbage pickup and $3.46 per unit for recycling.

The seven-year contract was signed by the Village Board during a Dec. 2 meeting.

Discussions on switching garbage disposal providers began this year after village residents experienced consistent pickup delays through Waste Management, one of many municipalities throughout Ozaukee County to have issues with the company.

Port Washington and the Town of Saukville have sought other waste disposal providers this year.
