Town hopes to eliminate burn pile with diplomacy

The Town of Belgium is trying to eliminate a burn pile at 2318 Hwy. A.

Zoning Administrator Charlie Parks told the Town Board this month that the property owner was sent a letter on Dec. 5 directing him to bring the property into conformity and informing him the town will allow “a reasonable amount of time” to burn down the pile in small manageable amounts and “just restore it back to its original state.”

The town had received complaints about the burn pile. Wood and construction materials have been brought to the site and burned, creating “quite a mess,” Parks said.

It is not an ordinance violation but “this is more of a kind of danger to the neighborhood,” Parks said.

“There’s a house close by. It’s a burning pile the size of this room, if not bigger,” Supr. Tom Bichler said.

If the burning continues, Parks said, the town will contact its attorney for advice.
