Tons of stone for a slippery slope

Workers spent last week spreading tons of rocks across Port Washington High School’s south hillside in an effort to stabilize the slope that collapsed on May 18 after heavy rain that caused flooding in the city. The rocks were installed after loose soil was scraped from the hill and geotextile fabric was spread across the slope. A wood retaining wall will be built along the top of the hill. The photo below shows the hill’s proximity to the City of Port Washington’s outdoor pool. The fence around the pool and a road that runs along the north side of it were damaged by the mudslide. The project, which is expected to cost the Port Washington-Saukville School District more than $200,000, is to be essentially completed next week. Installation of a chain-link fence along the bottom of the hill and landscaping is to be done next year. Photos by Bill Schanen IV
