Teenager seriously injured in Port bike accident
A 15-year-old Port Washington High School student was seriously injured Saturday evening when the bike she was riding collided with a passing vehicle.
Witnesses told police the girl was riding her bike east on the sidewalk on the north side of Grand Avenue across from the Mobile gas station about 5:10 p.m. when she abruptly turned into traffic, Police Chief Kevin Hingiss said.
The girl, who lives in Port, darted out from between two cars into traffic and was struck by a Mitsubishi Outlander heading west on Grand Avenue driven by Karen Koller, 53, of Port Washington, Hingiss said.
“There was just no time for the driver to do anything to avoid the accident,” Hingiss said.
The girl, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike, which was partially underneath the car, he said.
Witnesses began doing CPR, Hingiss said, and when Officer Taylor Russell arrived at the scene he hooked the girl up to an automatic external defibrillator. It did not recommend shocking the girl, so Russell gave rescue breaths to her until he noticed she was breathing on her own.
Port Fire Chief Mark Mitchell said that among those who stopped to help were a paramedic and nurse who were passing by and came upon the accident.
The Port ambulance took the girl to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, where she was then taken by a Flight for Life helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Wauwatosa.
Police have no update on her condition, Hingiss said Tuesday.
Hingiss said that Koller remained on the scene and cooperated with officers.
No citations were issued, he said.
