The tall ship Denis Sullivan will stop in Port Washington overnight Thursday, Aug. 9.

In addition to deck tours of the boat — considered Wisconsin’s flagship — there will be a picnic in Coal Dock Park, complete with games such as flag football, giant Jenga and giant tic-tac-toe.

“We’re just trying to ramp up the night and create a family night in the park,” Recreation Director Kiley Schulte said.

Those attending are asked to bring their own food, but treats will be for sale at the Cupcake-A-Rhee, which will be at the event.

Schulte said the Parks and Recreation Department will bring tables to the park for the event.

Music will also be provided.

The picnic is slated for 5 to 8 p.m., with deck tours of the Sullivan set for 6 to 8 p.m.

“The deck tours are the main event of the night,” Schulte said. “We want to see if we can get a crowd to come out.”

The Sullivan, which makes several stops in Port for cruises and deck tours during the summer, is stopping in the city this week as part of a five-day shipboard science workshop being attended by 16 teachers from Wisconsin and Minnesota.

In addition to its stop in Port, the Sullivan will stop in Sheboygan on Friday, Aug. 10, and in Two Rivers on Sunday, Aug. 12.

During the deck tours, the teachers will be able to talk to residents and visitors and engage them in activities that focus on coastal resilience.

This isn’t the Sullivan’s final stop in Port Washington this year.

The 137-foot-long ship is scheduled to return in time for the Paramount Music Festival, which will be held in Veterans Park from Aug. 31 to Sept. 2.

During its visit, the Sullivan will be available for not only deck tours but also cruises.
