Summer reading program activities set

The kickoff for the summer reading program at the Niederkorn Library in Port Washington will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1.

Those attending may decorate a doughnut and have juice or coffee while registering for the summer reading challenge.

Those attending may enter a drawing for a Nintendo Switch. The drawing will take place Monday, June 3.

A variety of summer reading program events has also been announced by the library.

The Pokémon Trading Card Club will meet from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturdays, July 6 and Aug. 3.

The Vision Impairment/Low Vision Game Club will meet from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Saturdays, July 6 and Aug. 3.

The Lego Club for children ages 5 and older will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. June 15 and Aug. 17.

Summer reading storytimes will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays from June 11 to Aug. 20.

After the stories, there will be play time and crafts.

The sessions are most appropriate for toddlers through kindergartners and their siblings, but they are open to all.

The storytimes on June 25, July 23 and Aug. 13 will take place at Possibility Playground, but in the event of inclement weather, the events will be at the library’s community room.

STEM storytimes will be held from 10 to 11 a.m.  Wednesdays from June 12 to Aug. 21.

These programs feature a shortened storytime in the children’s library followed by hands-on STEM activities in the community room that follow a different theme each week.

The targeted age group is preschool through second grade, but youngsters of all ages are welcome.

There will not be a STEM storytime on June 19 or July 3.

“Mischief and Magic” will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. June 20.

The comedy-driven magic act includes giant balloons, juggling and fire shows.

An Elmore Lawson Drum Circle will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. June 27.

The program is for people of all levels of experience who want to learn basic drum rhythms and chants, as well as call and response.

“Dinosaur Dimensions” will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. July 18 by Strutz Entertainment,

Youngsters will meet “dinosaurs,” a collection of realistic puppets that include a baby triceratops, raptor, pteranodon and T-rex, in the stage show. There will be opportunities for audience participation.

“Shipwrecks of the Great Lakes” will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. July 25.

The hands-on STEM program will allow participants to rotate through stations while learning about various facets of diving and shipwrecks.

Participants will have access to an audio Port Washington shipwrecks walking tour and the PBS “Legend of the Lost Emerald” game, inspired by Great Lakes history.

The program is most appropriate for students in grades 3 to 6.

   Tween & Teen Tuesdays will feature a variety of topics.

Anime drawing will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. June 18, with youngsters learning to draw anime characters with artist Paul Merklein.

Henna art will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. July 16 with an artist from Hands of Henna by Anita. Advance registration is required by emailing Jamie Mercer, head of Youth Services at the library, at jmercer@monarchlibraries.org or by calling (262) 284-5031.

The movie “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny “ will be shown from 2 to 4:30 p.m. July 30.

The movie is rated PG-13.
