Student video is all the buzz during No Mow May

Students from Webster Middle School in Cedarburg, including eighth-graders (from left) Marissa Jacoby, Lucien Gusdorf and Alanna D’Urso, are doing their part to protect pollinators by supporting the No Mow May movement with a video they starred in and produced with the help of White Rice Advertising & PR of Germantown. Released last week, the “Give Bees a Chance” video features several bees played by students waking from hibernation to a bounty of pollen only to watch it being torn up by a lawn mower. It transitions to the Webster Wolverine Choir singing “All we are saying ... is give bees a chance,” a take on John Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance.” White Rice Advertising & PR donated its time to oversee the project and worked with students who filmed and edited the video, which can be found on social media and is being shown before every movie at the Rivoli Theatre in Cedarburg this month. The video project coincides with a recent decision by the Cedarburg Common Council to support No Mow May, which is the inspiration for yard signs like the one that received two thumbs-up from Lucien (right). The movement encourages people not to their lawns in May because that is the time that bees and other pollinators emerge from hibernation and need pollen and nectar.
