Staying cool in college

Grafton High School senior Jaden Mirek (seated) recently signed a letter of intent to play goalkeeper for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute hockey team in Troy, N.Y. She was joined by (from left) her brother Wyatt, mother Tanya, father Pete and sister Camille. Hockey is the only Division 1 sport at RPI. Jaden started playing hockey when she was 10 and played goalie at 11. She played three years for the Milwaukee Junior Admirals and one year for the Lakeshore Lightning. “It’s a lot more challenging, very different than anything else,” she said of the sport. She received an academic scholarship to the school and plans to major in mechanical engineering.                                             Photo by Mitch Maersch
