A Grafton family will be displaced for four months after their home received significant smoke damage in a fire last Friday.

The Grafton Fire Department responded to a call in the 1600 block of North Green Bay Road at 12:09 p.m. Friday, March 1, after one of the residents returned home and reported heavy smoke coming from the building.

Division Chief Matthew Karpinski said the blaze was caused by the improper disposal of fireplace ashes. The fire was quickly extinguished but because the two residents were not home at the time, there was significant smoke damage throughout the house.

“Their insurance company is giving them estimates that they will be displaced for approximately four months,” Karpinski said.

Karpinski said one of the residents arrived at the house after a neighbor had called about smoke emanating from the home. He said the delay in responding exacerbated the smoke damage.

“Whenever there is an inclination there could be a fire, call the fire department as soon as possible,” Karpinski said.

The resident was evaluated at the scene for smoke inhalation but was not taken to the hospital

There were four animals in the house at the time of the incident, three of which escaped. Firefighters rescued a cat. None of the animals were injured.

Two adults live in the house. They are  currently staying at a hotel and working with their insurance company to find more permanent housing, Karpinski said.
