Smaller Port Washington swim team wins three events in finale

The Port Washington High School girls’ swim team closed out its regular season missing several girls due to illness or quarantine due to contact tracing, but three Pirates won individual events.

Port lost, 123-63, to powerful Homestead.

Sophomore Abbey Lotz took a “comfortable lead” and won the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 14.63 seconds, co-coach Danielle Peiffer said.

Sophomore Josie Tetzlaff won the 100 butterfly in a 1:06.58, a personal record by four seconds.

Sophomore Madi Klein led Port’s best event of the night, the 100 freestyle, edging teammate and fellow sophomore Emma Huber for first place in a personal-record 1:02.32. Huber finished in 1:02.68.

“This is a highly competitive event and we are making great strides,” Peiffer said. “For the first time, Klein and Huber both swam 1:02s.”

Huber narrowly beat Klein in the 50 freestyle, taking second in 28.54 seconds. Klein finished third in 28.73.

Lotz took second in the 500 freestyle in 6:01.07, and two Port relays took second.

The 200 medley relay of Tetzlaff, seniors Kelly Ball and Erin Grisar and Huber swam a 2:17.56.

The 400 freestyle relay of Klein, Grisar, junior Leah Sheriff and Lotz was second in 4:31.09.

Tetzlaff was third in the 200 individual medley in 2:42.45.

Sophomore diver Stephanie Schlessinger was fourth, scoring 178.65 points, a personal record by seven points.

Peiffer said the coaches noticed the development in the team over the season.

“Their starts, turns and technique have all improved considerably, and we are very proud of their progress,” she said.

Port hosts the North Shore Conference meet Saturday.
